The Grammy’s is my all-time favorite awards show. This year’s show rose to the top as one of the best! There were more musical performances than ever and the pace moved quickly from one artist to the next; it was like a fun concert experience.
Musicians, the artistic geniuses that they are, tease our senses with the sound of great music, our sight with performance artistry and push style boundaries in outfits in that equal their creative imagination.
Unlike the more traditional styles that show up at the Academy Awards, the Grammy’s are full of style surprises and shockers!
This year, while the show was a musical production hit, I didn’t find as many style hits as there were misses. My photo roundup is commentary about how the brand, body and beauty converge to make us swoon and applaud or shake our head in shock and confusion. Here are my picks for the Top 5 Best and Worst Dressed…Enjoy!
The Best!!!
My number one pick for the best in brand style brilliance! As a musician and fashion mogul, this fashion forward, on trend look of athletic wear meets evening wear shows Gwen Stefani’s keen eye for style and the perfect pick for the Grammy’s. Gwen’s hair, makeup and accessories are all in perfect harmony for the extravagant bodice detail to stand out as the focal point of her outfit. She looks like the veteran rock star she is, creative, unconventional and flawless!
This has been a controversial choice, showing up on an equal number of best AND worst dressed lists. This choice is right on brand for Taylor Swift. The look is tailored, bright and young. It highlights her best assets; her toned arms and legs. At 5’11”, she stands heads above her peers looking more like a fashion model than the iconic musical artist and can wear more fashion forward shapes. Her minimal use of bling puts all eyes on her hair, makeup, dress and shoes, perfectly styled in harmony and balance!
Katy Perry shines brightly as this stunning silver dress casts a beautiful glow on her face. Her sparkly chandelier earrings, purple hair and glamour makeup are the crowning jewels of her best beauty look ever. She looks the part of the artist and leader of her growing creative empire!
Meghan Trainor made a beautiful Grammy debut in this body flattering style choice! Many women feel self-conscious about showing their bare arms in addition to other areas of their body. In a sea of body-baring size 0 peers, Meghan can flash skin in comfort by baring her décolletage, legs and arms. This dress strategically placed embroidery in all the right places to give Meghan body confidence to strut her stuff on the red carpet in style!
Chrissy Tiegan shines brightly in the brightest white that beautifully flatters her skin tone and skims her curves. This is a creative choice with strategically placed skin-baring details that look elegant versus the usual let it all hang out skin show that we’ve been so used to seeing. It’s not easy to be completely covered up and look so sexy, well-done Chrissy!
The Worst!!!
So where do I start with this hot mess of a Grammy train wreck…Madonna has spent a lifetime of her career being shocking and unpredictable, but at this point in her career and life, this comes off as a re-tread of her past, trying too hard and doing too much, waaay too much. Cheeks out in the back, OMG, really? It’s great to stay in your brand style lane but it also needs to evolve with age and time. If not, you’ll wreck your brand by appearing stuck in a time bomb and past peak.
No doubt Kim Kardashian is a beautiful woman, but she left me scratching my head wondering how someone who so obsessively puts her body ALL out there on display can cover it up and get it so wrong for this big moment. This dress looked avant garde and fashion forward on the runway, so I can see the reason Kim and Kanye were attracted to it, unfortunately on Kim, it looks like a robe Liberace would have worn and so wrong for her body shape.
It works on a fashion runway model’s body, an inverted triangle with wide shoulders, slim hips and standing at least 5’11”. However, It doesn’t translate on Kim’s 5’3” frame with her voluptuous, bootyliscous pear-shape. To get it right, dressing for your body shape has to be equally as important as for your brand style.
I am always anticipating Rihanna’s fashion choices on Red Carpets, but this one was so far off her brand style mark, it left me disappointed and wondering what statement she was trying to make.
I’m all for trying new things, but this is so far from anything pretty, flattering or even interesting unless it is on a four-year-old in her princess style phase. Its too pink, fluffy, breast flattening and looks like a ginormous frosted cupcake, her biggest style miss ever!
Just like Rhianna, all of Ciara’s best beauty and body assets are lost in this confectionary mess of a gown. A brand, body and beauty style mess of a dress.
Say it ain’t so…noooooo! I’m usually a raving fan of Jane Fonda’s brand style choices; always ageless, body conscious and hits just the right tone for every occasion, until now. For the Grammy’s, it looks like Jane tried to keep up with her much younger musical fashionistas a little too hard and got caught up in a style sleeper.
First, the jumpsuit, popular in the 70’s, breaks my style rule; if you wore it the first time around as an adult, then you gotta take a pass when it comes back around, it’s usually past your peak.
Second, the necklace. I saw this in the window of Bebe for 20-somethings to rock, but waaaaay too young and trendy for Jane at 77 and well below the look of her brand economics.
Finally, Jane’s just doin’ too much. The bright green color is a statement in itself. When she combines the edgy jumpsuit that’s not complimentary to her shape, piled with too many accessories, the long necklace and wide belt that looks too young and in sharp contrast with overly sprayed hair that ages her from the neck up, this is a brand style disaster that disappoints!
